Breastfeeding Challenge
What: A fun event to challenge geographic areas to see who can get the most babies breastfeeding at one time. The winners are determined by percentage of birthrate.
When: October 3, 2009
Time: 11:00 am latch-on time - be at the event at 10:30 to register and get settled by 11:00.
Why: To celebrate breastfeeding, to educate the general public, to develop peer support, and to just have fun!
Location: The challenge can be anywhere you have 2 or more mothers gathered together. In Austin, HMHB and the Mothers’ Milk Bank at Austin (MMBA) are co-sponsoring the event at the Rosewood Zaragosa Recreation Center, Catherine Lamkin Pavillion. The center is at 1182 N. Pleasant Valley Road - at the corner of 12th and Pleasant Valley. You can either join us there or set up your own site. Go to www.babyfriendly.ca/challenge for more information on setting up a site and for handouts for mothers.
Numbers: As many moms and babies as you can get - 2 to 2000!
Sites: Anywhere. Some sites are someone’s home. Other sites are in hospitals. Sites can be in a park, at a clinic, at City Hall, on the Capitol grounds, at a community pool, at a local restaurant, at the mall, at a health fair, at a baby store, at a maternity store, at a library - anywhere you want to gather together to have a nurse-in. If your site is in a public location, be sure to get permission to use it as a site.
How the Breastfeeding Challenge got started: In 2001, the Quintessence Foundation in British Columbia started this event. That year, there were 856 babies in 26 sites in British Columbia. Last year, there were 5,383 babies at 230 sites across Canada and the US. This year the event will be an international effort.
Join the effort: Either sign up for a site or plan to join HMHB and MMBA at the Rosewood Zaragosa Recreation Center on Oct. 3. Come about 15-30 minutes early to register and find a spot. If you are not registered and ready to latch at 11:00 am, we will not be able to count you.
